Young, driven and ambitious leaders may be a rare sight in Thailand’s public service sector but Natwut Amornvivat led the way when he rose to the top of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau from where he recently tendered his resignation. What drives someone on the rise in private business to suddenly change track and what’s the next step for this rising star? Cameron Cooper met Natwut to discover his motivations.

A first glance at Natwut could be deceiving if you weren’t paying close attention. With boyish good looks that belie his 35 years and a soft spoken manner, you might mistake him for a wet behind the ears graduate. But the first clue to the contrary is his suit. He wears it well. And then there is the eye contact and the firm but yielding handshake that tell you he may be humble, but he is far from under confident. So far, this blend has served him well.
